Airport Amsterdam

Amsterdam Airport Schiphol is the fifth largest airport in Europe. About 45 million passengers use the airport per year and nearly 58,000 employees work around the clock to ensure that everything runs smoothly. The airport was given the name of "Luchthaven Schiphol" (Dutch name) due to the fort of the same name which was built in the 19th Century southwest of Amsterdam to protect the area of Haarlemmermeer lake that had been laid dry earlier. Amsterdam Schiphol Airport was founded in 1916 as a military base. The airport was already used for civilian flights as early as in 1920. During the Second World War, Amsterdam-Schiphol was bombed first by the Germans and later by the Allies and thereby severely damaged. The reconstruction of the airport was carried out almost immediately and in the following years the airport also received a high-speed connection to the European railway network, now offering non-stop services to major European cities such as Berlin, Paris, Brussels, Eindhoven and Den Haag. Even for motorists access is easy: the A4 motorway is connected to the airport via a separate access road. Parking is also available. Cheap parking facilities for a few days are available at the Schiphol Visitor Parking in the immediate vicinity of the departure and arrival halls. If parking for more than two days, it is advisable to use the Schiphol Park & Travel Parking (P3) from where there is a free shuttle bus to Schiphol Plaza. The plaza is the central link between Halls 1, 2 and 3 of the airport terminals and also contains the airport train station. To save on parking costs and still have the convenience of using a car, passengers can rent a car. On the Schiphol Plaza, directly behind the arrivals hall, there are several car rental companies such as Avis, Budget, Europcar, Hertz, National Car Rental and Sixt, all of which are open until 11 pm. Those who wish to recover from an exhausting trip can book a room at the Sheraton Amsterdam Airport Schiphol hotel, the Yotel Schiphol Airport or the Mercure Schiphol Terminal Hotel. All three hotels are on the premises of Amsterdam airport and have special overnight packages for air passengers. There are also many centrally located hotels in Amsterdam which offer a free transfer to Amsterdam airport.
