Airport Ankara
Ankara Airport, officially called Esenboğa International Airport, is the airport in the capital city of Turkey and one of the most important airports in the country as a whole. It is located about 30 km (18 miles) north-east of Ankara, near the village of Esenboga. Onur Air operates by far the most charter and scheduled flights from many airports in the UK to Ankara. During the period after the airport was first opened in 1955, it consisted of only one runway which was used for take-off and landing, and one terminal. Due to increasing passenger numbers, the airport was soon expanded and an additional runway built. The terminal building, which had been standing for over 50 years, was replaced by the new passenger terminal in 2006. Today, 175 daily flights arrive and leave from Ankara every day. The airport has undergone extensive renovations in recent years and is now one of the most modern airports in Europe. It is capable of handling around 10 million passengers per year. In 2009, the Airports Council International Europe (ACI) named the Turkish air transport hub as the best European airport with a passenger volume of 5 to 10 million. Passengers wanting to park their car at the airport will be able to reach the terminals conveniently from the multi-storey car park via a roofed walkway. Apart from the 4,000 or so covered parking spaces in the immediate vicinity of the terminal, the airport also has an outdoor car park about 50m from the terminal building. As there are no hotels close to the airport, travellers and tourists will have to travel into the city to find accommodation. With a hire car from one of the international car rental companies such as Avis, Europcar and Sixt, the journey to the Turkish capital will take about 45 minutes. Alternatively, there are taxi ranks immediately in front of the arrivals hall as well as buses that operate a service to the Turkish capital. The airport bus transfer service operated by Havas, which organises the bus service to Turkish airports, serves the airport from Ankara at 30-minute intervals. Depending on traffic, the journey takes about 35 to 60 minutes.
