Airport Barcelona

The Aeropuerto de Barcelona is the second largest airport in Spain, the airport's English name is Barcelona Airport. It is also called "El Prat", as it is located about 12 km or 8 miles southwest of Barcelona in the town of El Prat del Llobregat. El Prat Airport was opened in 1918 and in the following years served as a base for the Spanish Navy's Zeppelin fleet. Since 1927, there has been a commercial flight plan for civilian flights at the airport, the first of which was Iberia's route to Madrid. After the Second World War, Barcelona airport was greatly expanded so that by 1963, it was able to handle up to one million passengers. This was followed by extensive modernization and the construction of additional terminals and control towers. Only in 2009 – with the opening of the new terminal 1 – were the former terminals A, B and C combined to form Terminal 2. The older terminal 2 is used by low-cost airlines and charter companies such as easyJet; the new Terminal 1, on the other hand, is currently used by airlines such as Iberia, Lufthansa and Spanair. Those who are unsure which terminal to go to, can consult the large board of constantly updated flight departures and arrivals in the lobby of the airport. For further travel, for example to the nearby tourist resort of Lloret de Mar or to travel to the inner city, passengers can rent a car or use public transport. Cars may be rented directly at Barcelona airport, for instance from the national car rental company Atesa or the international car rental companies Sixt, Hertz, Europcar and Avis. Cars can be collected between 7 am and 3 am at Terminal 1 level 0 to level 1 or at Terminal 2B. Plenty of buses link Barcelona airport to the city. Bus No. 46 runs from Barcelona airport to Plaza de España, N17 bus to Plaza de Catalunya. Both of these are located in downtown Barcelona. If you are looking for a hotel at Barcelona airport, the 4-star Hotel Tryp Barcelona Aeropuerto at the large roundabout Plaça del Pla de l'Estany is very close to the airport. Further hotels in this category in close proximity are the Best Western Alfa Aeropuerto north-east of the airport and the Hotel Ciutat del Prat north of Barcelona airport.
