Airport Berlin (TXL, SXF)

The German capital currently has two international airports - Berlin-Tegel (TXL) and Berlin-Schönefeld (SXF) - the latter is officially in Brandenburg. Since 2007, Schönefeld airport has been undergoing development and when completed will become "Berlin-Brandenburg Airport". Building works are due to be completed in June 2012. Tegel airport will then be closed, so that all air traffic in Berlin will be carried out from Berlin-Brandenburg, which, in memory of the former Berlin mayor and former German Chancellor Willy Brandt, will carry his name. The modernization and expansion of Berlin Brandenburg airport was needed to deal with the ever increasing air traffic to and from Berlin. There are plans to manage 25 to 30 million passengers per year at Schönefeld airport and to increase the capacity of the airport in the future so that it can deal with up to 50 million passengers. City trips to Berlin are becoming increasingly popular due to the fact that Berlin is now the capital of a reunited Germany. The wide variety of interesting attractions, the city's turbulent history and the large number of historical buildings attract large numbers of visitors every year. However, Berlin is also popular for its young artist scene and the wide choice of exciting nightlife for young and old. A weekend trip to Berlin can include a trip to the State Opera Unter den Linden, the Philharmonie between Potsdamer Platz and Tiergarten or the Deutsche Oper in Charlottenburg, all this may also be combined conveniently with a sightseeing city tour - past the Berlin Zoo and the Memorial Church, the Reichstag, Brandenburg Gate and Alexanderplatz with its famous TV tower. Other events of interest include the performances of the Blue Man Group, productions of new musicals and shows, for example at the Theater am Potsdamer Platz or the Friedrichstadtpalast, and a visit to the Berlin Olympic stadium. There is no lack of accommodation in the German capital. Those looking for a cheap hotel or hostel in Berlin have a choice of over 100 hostels. For longer stays, renting a holiday flat may well be the cheapest option. There are also plenty of mid-price and luxury price hotels that want to make their guests' stay in Berlin as pleasant as possible.
