Belgrade Airport
Belgrade airport's official name is Nikola-Tesla-Belgrade airport- after the inventor of the two-phase alternating current, the Tesla Turbine and Tesla transformers - Nikola Tesla. The Serbian name of the airport is Aerodrom Nikola Tesla Beograd. Belgrade Airport is the biggest airport in Serbia and is located about 18 km or 11 miles from downtown Belgrade to the west of the city. It was built at the beginning of the 20th Century on a military training area in the district of Novi Beograd and was already served by international flights back in 1923 (including flights to Paris and Bucharest). After the second world war, the Serbian airline JAT began operating flights for civilian passengers. The ever-increasing air links eventually required a move into the adjacent, sparsely populated village of Surčin, where the new airport was officially inaugurated in 1962. Belgrade Airport now has a capacity of about five million passengers. [More]
