Airport Berlin-Tegel

With five terminals used by 15 million passengers per year, Berlin-Tegel airport (international code: TXL) is the fourth largest airport in Germany. As its name suggests, it is located in the Tegel district of Berlin, in Reinickendorf, a district in the north west of the capital. The airport was given its original name, "Otto Lilienthal", in 1988 after the German aviation pioneer Otto Lilienthal. Since the Second World War and after the six sided building with terminals A and B was inaugurated in 1974, Tegel Airport developed to become the most important airport in west Berlin. After the wall came down, three further terminals (C to E) were built. When the construction of Berlin Airport Berlin-Schönefeld has been completed, Tegel airport will be closed. This is expected to be in June 2012. Those travelling to the airport can take public transport (bus TXL) or use the car. Costs for parking vary according to the proximity of the car park to the airport terminals. The car parks are numbered P1 to P5. Short term parking is available for free for a maximum of 15 minutes in the short-term car park PK. Visitors may pay by cash or debit card. There is also a free shuttle service from all the car parks to the airport terminals. Renting a car in the city can be a convenient way of getting around. There are eight international car rental companies at Tegel airport including Avis, Europcar, Hertz and Sixt. The offices are located in front of car park P2. In order to quickly get to the correct terminal, passengers should inform themselves beforehand of the exact departure or arrival of their flight at Berlin-Tegel airport. Air Berlin flies from one of the two terminals A and C with Terminal C being used exclusively by Air Berlin. Terminal E is only used for arrivals. The main building is hexagonal, and the gates are arranged in a ring. The taxi parking area within the hexagon is allowing for extremely convenient access to the check-in counters. Those passengers arriving extremely early or departing late can stay in one of the nearby hotels. Both the Quality Hotel Berlin Tegel and the Dorint Mercure Airport Hotel are located very close to the airport and provide superior comfort.
