Airport Delhi
Delhi Airport, which is officially called Indira Gandhi International Airport after the former Indian Prime Minister, is one of the major transport hubs in South Asia besides Mumbai Airport. Since 2006, the airport has been operated by Delhi International Airport Limited (DIAL). For years passenger numbers have been increasing along with the ambitious goals of the airport authorities. According to DIAL, by 2030 New Delhi Airport should be able to deal with 100 million passengers a year. The airport was built during the Second World War and was known by the name of Palam Airport. Initially a military airport used by the Royal Air Force, it was only actually used for civilian traffic in the 1960s. As passenger numbers continued to rise in subsequent years, the airport received a new terminal. Terminal 2 was opened in 1986. That same year, the airport was also renamed Indira Gandhi International Airport. Since passenger numbers increased Terminal 3 was constructed and officially inaugurated after a construction period of 3 years in 2010. Covering an area of over 500,000 square metres with a capacity of 34 million passengers per year, it is one of the largest terminals in the world. In coming years, two additional check-in areas will be created in order to serve the growing needs of the Indian and Asian flight market. On arrival, finding a hotel close to the airport will not be difficult. There is a wide choice of accommodation in around the immediate area of the terminals. The Eaton Smart Airport Hotel is especially practical as it is located directly in Terminal 3 and is accessible to all with a valid flight ticket. Transfer from Delhi airport is possible by public transport. The Airport Express will take passengers to the centre of the capital of India at 20-minute intervals. There is also a bus that goes from the airport to Delhi city centre every 30 minutes. The taxi rank outside the arrivals hall is served by the three taxi companies, Meru Cabs, Easy Cabs and Mega Cabs.
