Airport Dubai

Dubai airport is one of the major airports in the Middle East. The state-owned airline Emirates has its headquarters here. The new Terminal 3 is reserved for use by Emirates and, on opening in 2008, this terminal had the largest area of any airport terminal in the world. In order to allow for a total terminal area of 1.5 million square m, the runway was moved. With the rising economic power of the Emirate of Dubai, the airport also gained in importance from the 1980s onwards. Once it became clear that the airports capacity had reached its limits due to growing passenger numbers, construction work on a new airport began. This airport, Dubai World Central International Airport (DWC), was to become the major airport and was initially intended to complement the old airport. In the long run, however, the airport will replace it. While the new Terminal 3 at Dubai International Airport is reserved for Emirates Airline, Terminal 2 is used exclusively for business, charter and special flights. At Terminal 1, the majority of national and international flights will be handled. There is a shuttle bus between the terminals. In addition, buildings 1 and 3 are connected by a covered pathway. Since the airport is just 5 km or 3 miles from downtown Dubai, transfer is relatively easy and convenient. From Terminal 1 a fully automated metro operates to the centre of the city. Similarly, buses run to the city at 10-minute intervals. Many hotels in Dubai also provide shuttle buses to the airport. Taxis in Dubai are cream-coloured cars. In addition to these standard taxis there are also special pink women's taxis. The journey time by taxi to the centre of the city is about 10 minutes.
