Airport Dublin

Dublin Airport is the busiest airport in Ireland and is situated about 10 km or 7 miles north of the city centre just off the M1 motorway. The airport is home to the famous Irish airlines Ryanair, Aer Lingus and Aer Arann. The airport was opened in January 1940 and was called Collinstown Airport. At that time only one flight per day served Liverpool which was operated by an Aer Lingus Lockheed 14. The old airport terminal design was inspired by the bridge of a ship and at the time won a number of architectural awards. The building is now called the "Old Central Terminal Building" (OCTB). Although the airport currently has two newer terminals, the old terminal building is still in use occasionally. However, it was only designed to handle 100,000 passengers per year, so that in 1971, the construction of today's Terminal 1 became necessary. In times of a boom in low-cost flights and a general increase in air traffic, the terminal became too small after 40 years, so that the infrastructure was expanded and in 2010, the new Terminal 2 was finally opened. The airport is now able to handle 35 million passengers per year. From Dublin Airport taxis and buses provide transport into the city. Numerous bus routes also serve the city centre of Dublin at 10 to 20-minute intervals. The Airlink Express connects the airport to Heuston and Connolly railway stations, and the bus station on Store Street. The journey by taxi to Dublin city centre takes about 30 minutes.
