Airport Lisbon
Used by around 14 million passengers annually, Lisbon Portela airport (in Portuguese: Aeroporto de Lisboa / Aeroporto da Portela) is the largest airport in Portugal. It is also a popular transit airport for flights to South Africa. Lisbon Airport was opened in 1940. The construction of a new and longer take-off and landing runway in 1962 has allowed the airport to be served by transatlantic flights. More recently in 2007, the airport received a new terminal, which is used for domestic flights. Since it is one of the few inner-city airports in Europe and cannot be further expanded due to the proximity of the buildings, in 2008 it was decided to build a new airport in Alcochete, east of Lisbon, which is due to be completed by 2017. Until then, Lisbon Portela Airport offers passengers all the services they will need. Travellers may rent a car at one of the local car rental companies. International car rental companies such as Europcar and Hertz have offices at Lisbon airport as well as the local car rental company Guerin and Auto Jardim. Public transport at Lisbon airport is operated by the buses 22, 44, 83, 208 (night bus only), 705 or 745. Passengers with heavy or bulky luggage should preferably use the Aerobus Logo bus. Aerobus Logo Line 1 runs at 20 to 30 minute intervals to the city centre. Accommodation is available near Lisbon Portela airport in the Holiday Inn Express Lisbon Airport or the Radisson Blu Hotel Lisbon.
