Airport Manila

Manila airport bears the official name Ninoy International Airport and is centrally located about 7 km or 4 miles south of the Philippine capital. The capital's airport is considered to be the most important airport on the island nation, and most flights to the Philippines go via Manila Airport. Before it was used for civilian purposes, the airfield was an American military base. Until 1987, the airport operated under the name Manila International Airport. A turning point in the history of the transport hub and that of the country as a whole was the assassination of the Filipino politician Benigno Aquino. When he returned from exile in 1938, he was murdered on arriving at the airport. After the overthrow of the Marcos regime, his widow Corazon Aquino became president. The airport received its present name a year after the elections in honour of the murdered politician. The airport has three terminals which are linked by a shuttle bus. Terminal 1 is used for international flights by foreign airlines. The departure hall 2 is used exclusively by Philippine Airlines. Terminal 3 (NAIA3) is reserved for international flights operated by Philippine Airlines. The new terminal building was completed in 2002, but was only officially opened years later. Passengers looking for a transfer hotel at Manila airport can head for the Manila Airport Hotel in the immediate vicinity of Terminal 1, or the Marriott Hotel opposite the new departures hall 3. Both are within walking distance of the terminal buildings. A taxi ride to the city centre takes 20 to 60 minutes depending on traffic. The taxi ranks are located outside the arrivals area. However, passengers should take care to only use the yellow cabs which are licensed taxis.
