Airport Moscow

The Russian capital Moscow is home to a large number of popular and beautiful tourist attractions: the Kremlin, Red Square, the Moscow state circus, the radio or television tower, Gorky Park or Luzhniki Stadium, to name just a few. Tourists travelling to Moscow can choose to fly to one of four international airports. The oldest airport in the city is Moscow Vnukovo airport, which has been in operation since 1941. The airport derived its name from the Vnukovo district in Moscow, which is located in the south-west of the city and is about 30 km or 19 miles from the city centre. Moscow Vnukovo airport is most easily reached using the Aero-Express train which stops underground. This operates an hourly service and takes about 35 minutes to get to Moscow's Vnukovo airport from the metro station Kievskaya. Alternatively, passengers can also take the bus 611 from Yugo-Zapadnaya which takes slightly longer, or a taxi or marshrutka (shared taxi) via the motorways M1 and M3. Cheap flights to Moscow Vnukovo International are available from London to Moscow with Aerosvit Airlines or Aeroflot, for example. The second oldest airport in Moscow is Sheremetyevo airport in the north-west of the Russian capital. About 30 km or 18 miles from the city centre, Sheremetyevo international is located near the town of Lobnya by the village of Sheremetyevo, from which it takes its name. Transport from the Moscow station Belorusskaya to Sheremetyevo Airport's terminal E takes about 35 minutes with the Sheremetyevo express train. The bus number 851 leaves from the metro station Rechnoy vokzal (North River Terminal) at 10 to 30 minute intervals, and bus 817 goes to the airport from Planernaya metro station at 15 to 30 minute intervals. Both buses take approximately 40 to 50 minutes to reach the airport. Travel by Marshrutka taxi is possible from the metro stations Retschnoi vokzal and Planernaya. If travelling to the airport by car please follow the M10 motorway; however, long traffic jams are to be expected particularly during the day. KLM, Air France, CSA Czech Airlines and Turkish Airlines all operate flights from various airports in the UK to Moscow Sheremetyevo. Aeroflot and Air Baltic also fly from London, Aberdeen and Leeds to Sheremetyevo, and Air Baltic flies from Sheremetyevo to London and Liverpool. The third oldest and also the largest airport is Moscow Domodedovo Airport in the south of the Russian capital. Domodedovo International Airport is about 35 km or 21 miles from the city centre, near the town of Domodedovo which has a population of 80,000. The Aero Express train connects Moscow Domodedovo once or twice an hour with the train station Pawelezki vokzal taking 40 minutes for the trip. Express buses and taxis operate four times an hour from the metro station to Domodedovskaya airport. The journey takes about half an hour. By car, the airport terminals are easy to reach on the M4 motorway. Airlines that operate cheap flights to Domodedovo airport include bmi british midland and Transaero Airlines - eg from London Heathrow, or Airberlin from London-Stansted to Moscow with one stopover. Other airlines landing at Domodedovo are Swiss International Air Lines, Austrian Airlines and, of course, British Airways. Moscow's fourth and newest international airport is Ostafyevo International Airport, which was opened in 2000 and is located only 12 km or 8 miles south of Moscow. The airport is used for business flights only.
