More information about Shanghai Pudong Airport
The construction of the new airport was needed to relieve the old Hongqiao Airport, which by the 1990s had reached its capacity. The first phase of expanding the airport was completed in 2008. A new terminal along with a third runway and landing strip were opened. Future plans provide for three terminals, 5 runways and two satellite halls in order to allow for a capacity of 100 million passengers a year.
The distance from the airport to downtown is about 30 km or 23 miles. Between the airport and the Pudong district, the Transrapid magnetic train (developed in Germany), or Maglev (Shanghai Maglev Train) operates at regular intervals. The train only takes about 8 minutes to cover the distance of 30 km or 23 miles, reaching top speeds of 430 km/h. There are also seven bus lines and the metro M2 linking the airport with the districts of Shanghai as well as with Hongqiao Airport.
