Airport Tel Aviv

Tel Aviv airport is the only international airport and thus also the largest airport in Israel. It is also the international airport for Jerusalem. The distance to the Israeli capital is about 60 km or 40 miles. The airport is about 20 km or 14 miles from Tel Aviv. It was named after the first Israeli Prime Minister David Ben Gurion. Originally opened in the 1930s, the airport was primarily used by the British armed forces as a military airfield until, after World War II, it was passed over to the newly established State of Israel and then used as a civilian airport. At first it was named after the nearby town of Lod. When the first Prime Minister Ben Gurion died in 1973, the airport was renamed in his honour. It now has 3 terminals and, due to tight security, is one of the safest airports in the world. The security checks are thorough and can be quite time consuming. Visitors are advised to arrive at the airport in good time - ideally as much as 3 hours before departure. The airport has excellent transport links to Jerusalem and Tel Aviv. Many buses operated by the company Egged serve the route between the airport and Tel Aviv, Jerusalem and other cities throughout Israel. There is also a fast train to Tel Aviv. The station is located in the vicinity of Terminal 3, opposite the lobby. Train tickets can be purchased from the machine on level G. Taxi stands are also located on Level G of Terminal 3. Besides conventional taxis there are also taxis called Sheruts. These are significantly cheaper, but are likely to take longer travelling to the desired destination. Short-term parking facilities are to be found at the terminals. Long-term parking can be found at some distance from the terminals. Every 15 minutes a shuttle bus transports passengers to the terminals.
