Airport Warsaw

The airport in Warsaw is considered the largest and most important airport in Poland and is the home base and main hub of the Polish airline LOT. In 2001, the airport, which has two starting and landing runways, was renamed Frederic Chopin. When it opened in 1933, the airport served mainly military purposes. During the Second World War the city of Warsaw was destroyed and the airport bombed. The first terminal to be opened after reconstruction work is now no longer in use. Instead, passengers check in at terminals 1 and 2, which were opened in 1992 and 2008 for civilian use. An additional terminal building, Etiuda terminal, was opened for budget airlines. Since 2009, low cost flights have, however, been handled at Terminal 1. For private jets there is a special terminal, the VIP Aviation Terminal. The airport is just 10 km or 7 miles from downtown, meaning that transfer to and from Warsaw airport is fairly straightforward. Public buses commute between Warsaw and the airport. Bus number 575 goes to the metro station Wilanowska. At night and during the early morning hours, the night bus N32 can also be used for transfer to the airport. The airport is easy to reach by car via the Zwirki-I-Wigury-Avenue, which goes directly from Warsaw's centre to the airport. Passengers can also use the services of the leading car rental companies or take a taxi. At the airport there are four parking areas offering short-and long-term parking for a total of 3700 vehicles.
