Sorry guys, but this place is awful. Half the food stalls serve Pad Thai by mixing peanut butter, ketchup and lime in with some noodles, and you can't get from one side of the road to the other without being accosted by touts shouting at you from every direction. It's so weird how everything immediately improves the moment you step off Khao San (the food quality in the areas immediately surrounding Khao San are great). Now there definitely are advantages to being near Khao San because you can pretty much find anything under the sun there, but I'll only enter that street if I really need to.

It was built in 1782, and it houses not only the royal residence and throne halls, but also a number of government offices and the renowned Temple of the Emerald Buddha. It covers an area of 218,000 square meter and it's surrounded by 1900 meter wall length. You will be bewildered by the huge statues, decorted doors, golden domes, Bonzai trees, temples, Budha statues. When you visit the Palace you should be wearing decent clothes.

So huge that it is easy to get lost, this market must be one of the world's biggest. It offers everything from household goods to tourist items to animals. There is even a cock fighting section (I would advise you avoid this with the bird flu still floating around!). It is quite easy to catch a bus from the Khao San backpacker area there and back.

Wat Pho is certainly one to see. Until you actually see the reclining Buddha, you won't believe it. It's absolutely massive! But on top of that, and probably one of the main reasons that I visited this temple, is the Thai massage you can get there. It's apparently the second best massage that you will get in Thailand. I didn't try the so-called "best place" so I don't know whether this is true, but I certainly enjoyed the massage that I received at Wat Pho. There are two locations where you can receive the Wat Pho massage. One is on the grounds of the Temple, there are generally enormous queues for it so it is best to get there early. Also there is no air con, so this might prove to be uncomfortable. The second spot is a few blocks away, there are directions at the first spot. I would argue that this second location is better because it is not normally as busy and they have air con too. While the massage at Wat Pho is a bit more expensive than elsewhere in Thailand, it's incredibly worth it because you know that you are guaranteed to receive a top class massage.

Seven levels of market style shopping. Level 7 has some great places for a Thai massage, pedicure and manicures. Levels 1-3 tend to be fashion and shoes, electronics and fake DVDs tend to be levels 5-7. Level 7 has heaps of pashmina shops. Maccas is on level 1!!! Some shops are bargaining shops, others tend to be “fixed price”. If no sign then BARGIN!!!!!!

I loved the grand palace, it was a great way on the first few days in Thailand to get a proper hold on the relationship the Thai people have with their King. The King in Thailand is treated as God, a living deity, and you as a guest in the country need to show the same amount of respect. The Royal palace has amazing grounds and several beautiful buildings housing different shrines to Buddha or the royal palace itself. Go early as it closes at about 2 in the afternoon. BEWARE of scams outside the palace. Don't talk with anyone outside the palace most are going to scam you, Thai people are super friendly but these people are not just friendly because they are Thai trust me.

You'll be bewildered by the smell of fried seafood and you can't resist the temptation to taste the grilled hot food. As dessert you can buy tropical peeled food and eat them while you continue strolling.

If you are a bargain hunter this is a great place to go. At night the locals set up stalls outside and there are a lot of good deals to be had.

This place is shopaholic heaven! Each floor has its own theme, so you can quickly zero in on what you're interested in. Eg. a girl can shop for clothes makeup, and if her boyfriend gets tired of shopping, he can retreat to the technology floor and check out the electronics there. Everybody's happy. :) This is a huge mall, so if you plan to do some serious shopping, allow at least half a day. There are plenty of restaurants and food court spaces where you can sit down and take a break from all the walking shopping, and where you can also recharge and wind up for more shopping.
